Kollegah is the son of a Canadian father and a German mother. He was raised mostly by his mother after his father left at an early age. The nickname "Kollegah" seems to be a reference to his stepfather. Kollegah grew up in Simmern. At the age of 15 he converted to Islam. In an interview he explained, that he came in contact with the religion due to the faith of his stepfather . He started gatehring information by reading books. He was also temporarily active as a translator. Among other things he translated "Death Resurrection Hell" by Adnar Oktar from English into German.

In 2003 he started his rap carrer und the the name "T.O.N.I.". His first mixtape, Zuhältertape Vol. 1, was released in the internet for free. In 2005 he was signed to Selfmade Records, where he re-released his mixtape, now titled Zuhälter X-Mas Edition. On July 9, 2006 his second mixtape, Boss der Bosse, was released. Half the beats on the album were produced by Selfmade-producer Rizbo. His first solo album was planned to be released in September 2007 but was postponed due to a lawsuit against Kollegah. Eventually it was released on November 16, 2007. A musicvideo for the song "Kuck auf die Goldkette 2007" has been shot. It was premiered on October 23, 2007. It reached the 1st place on the German MTV-Show TRL Urban several times. The Tracks "Showtime" and "Sommer" from his mixtape Boss der Bosse were used in the soundtrack odNachtspuren, a german independent-film. On April 17, 2009 label sampler Chronik 2 was released. It reached #15 in the German album-charts. On June 16, 2009 Jung Brutal Gutaussehend was released, a collabo album by Kollegah and Farid Bang. It managed to reach #30 in German album-charts.

Kollegah's style is heavily based on gangsta rap, but his personal characterization is "pimp rap". He's well-known for his double time-ability, complex rhyme-structures and punchlines. Kollegah and his rap partner Farid Bang stated, that they both are technically better than other rappers in Germany, because nobody else has got this style of double time rapping or complex rhymes.
